35 years after the first VQ-2 A-3 flew in Europe, eight EA-3Bs and one
TNRA-3B lined up on the flightline of VQ-2 in Rota, Spain. Some of these
A-3s were assigned duty providing vital electronic recon in the Middle East

Picture 1 of 2: "Swish" writes: "These shots are a real tribute to Contractors and of course the design of the A-3 that allowed it to be modified again and again. This particular A-3 started out as a TA-3B, was later modified to a VA-3B configuration for the CNO and in these shots are shown as an EA-3B... Picture 2 of 2: ...The EA mod was done at ESI in Waco about 1987, I worked at ESI in 1983 when it was located in Dallas at Love Field. Anyhow this A-3 144854 has a very low number of traps being the CNO bird and was in excellent condition when the A-3's were decommissioned from the Navy. It is reported that this bird is also owned by a civilian company and still flying.

"Swish" tells: "This one is a four ship over VQ-2. Lead ship is us we were returning
from a CVC in the Med, two were in the bounce pattern and one was
returning from a national mission. Not often when we had four airborne
at the same time." (Posted OCT 97, compliments of Mark Swisher) |

"Swish" tells: "This shot here is us over the pacific. VQ-2 was tasked to support East
Coast carriers in the I.O. We took off from Rota, Azores, Americas,
Hawaii, Wake, Guam, PI, Diego, Ike, Djoubouti, Athens, Rota. Around the
world in 1980 cruise. The shot was taken by a crewman in the DC-80 which
carried all of our maintenance guys, tools, parts and etc.
CDR. Brennan(Good Nav) wrote an article about this trip in one of the
Naval magazines. Something about going 17,000 miles to catch up with our
ship. What's neat is that when the Arabs wouldn't let us cross their
country we said heck with it and went the other way. This trip had a lot
of Capt. Jack influence with a Naval Can-Do attitude the whole way(esp.
in the PI)." (Posted OCT 97, compliments of Mark Swisher and photographer AMSC John Herndon) |
